Synopsis

Russell William Nalle (pronounced Nawlee) is a professional golfer but not a very good one.  He won a tournament in China, which was little more than a fluke.  He has a monumental ego and reacts badly when his shortcomings are exposed.  After being suspended from the PGA Tour for bad conduct, he tries the Asian Tour.  He aims to play again on the PGA Tour, but he contracts cancer in his right eye.  The cancer is successfully removed by surgery but he is never able to regain his perceived ability as a golfer.

Allen Bright is a young golf professional who has just burst upon the scene.  He has won state and national amateur titles and makes his way to the tour by winning a regular tour event as an amateur.  He immediately turns pro and begins soaring to the top in professional golf.  After his successful first season on tour, he marries his long-time girl friend, builds an expensive home in Orlando, and flies to the tournament venues in a private Lear Jet.

Russell William Nalle, shortened predictably to Rusty Nalle, or Rusty Nail, his hated nickname, spends a lot of time trying to inflict retribution on Allen Bright.  He is envious of Allen Bright's success and often broods about Bright ruining his big chance on the PGA Tour.  He works for a time in the repair shop at a country club at which his brother is the head golf professional.  He finally participates in some illegal activity and acquires enough money to launch a mobile repair facility which he uses to gain access to PGA Tour venues.  Subsequently, he uses an ingenious way to foil the soaring career of his arch enemy, Allen Bright.

Sadly, Allen Bright's career is effectively ruined at the hands of Rusty Nalle, but it's done in such a manner that Rusty is not found out until he makes a deathbed confession to Allen.   The confession is witnessed by no one else.  Allen now knows that the accident that ruined his career was not an accident at all, but there is no way for him to prove it.

In the end Rusty dies without ever being punished for his evil deed.  Allen is left with a clear conscience, but must begin to rebuild his career with the help of his friends.
